Narcissism No More

So you've been reading online about all the different methods and techniques to end your narcissistic relationship and regain the freedom you have always yearned for. You've tried confronting your significant other about the issue countless times, and maybe even attended meetings with other people suffering through the same issues as you in hopes of ending the narcissistic abuse.

Unfortunately, even after all of this, you have noticed little to no changes at all. You're right where you started when you first sat down at the computer and began your journey. Sound familiar?

The man I married gradually revealed his narcissistic nature, but I was already hooked to his show. I became the victim of a carefully-orchestrated plan to take me out of touch with who I was. I lost direction under his clever manipulation. I learned to tolerate abuse, emotional, and verbal. I lived in fear of everything – of displeasing him or even, of being myself. I tried to fight back, but I only succeeded in hurting myself further.

Under his clever ministrations, I came to believe a new truth. I was the nagging wife who couldn’t tolerate his excesses. The abuse I received was my fault. I should be doing better to make him more comfortable. I was the angry partner who didn’t understand that love is full of sacrifices.

For the ten years I was married to James, life was a jumble of pain, abuse, fear, emotional devastation, codependency, and short, intermittent doses of care that confirmed to me that I was bad, and he was good. I was broken, lost, and unrecognizable. This is the fate of most victims of narcissistic abuse. This was my fate until I decided to change it.
